Tuckahoe Swim - Note From Coach Torey
We are excited to start the season - as is the case with the start of anything new come first impressions. The coaches are excited to see all of our new and returning Tigers - we hope to make a great first impression on your kids as they start this new season. First impressions make such a big impact on people's experience's and we want to make sure that from the first day our athletes are excited, improving, and getting everything they can out of this summer.
To do this, it is absolutely critical that kids come to practice with everything they need. A proper swim suit is a must - absolutely no trunks, water shirts, or non competitive swim suits of any kind - this additional drag makes it very hard to swim properly and will make this challenge of starting something new unnecessarily steep. Having a good pair of competitive goggles is important to allow kids to do everything from swimming to diving and racing - not being able to trust your eyes causes swimmers to be unnecessarily tense, which we are trying to cut down as we need to be relaxed while working hard. Having fins and snorkels is the last big piece - we will be doing a lot of drill work with longer repeats/distances as we start the season to make sure kids are in the right position to swim fast when the time comes - fins/snorks are needed to assist with many drills we will do and being without these things will make it difficult to keep up and do what the coaches are asking. In my experience, not having the right equipment will immediately cause a bad first impression and make it much more difficult for the coaches to help our kids get into the season.
Caps are another necessary piece of equipment - guys and girls with hair going to their eyes need a cap to swim properly in training. Please be sure to label everything with your name in permanent marker. For many snorkels it is worth taking out of the packaging and trying on before you come - some have a screw that needs to be tightened so it fits on your head, and we wont be able to fix that during practice.
Otherwise, sit back and let the magic happen - we will take care of your kids and help them with everything they need. If you have questions please talk to coaches after practice/away from the pool so we can focus on the job at hand or go to the reps.
This is going to be a lot of fun and we cannot wait to get started!
