πŸŒ™βœ¨ Swim Team Late Nite & the Return of the Cardboard Boat Race! πŸ›ΆπŸ’¦

πŸ“… Saturday, June 27
πŸ•• 6:00–10:00 PM
πŸ“ Tuckahoe Recreation Club

One of Tuckahoe’s favorite traditions is almost here!

We’ve seen skits, cakes, and all kinds of creativity over the years, but this year we convinced the Club to let us bring back a fan favorite: the Cardboard Boat Race!

Swimmers will form teams, build their boats at home, and then launch their masterpieces on Late Nite to see who can make it across the pool before going under. Fast boats, crazy designs, and spectacular sinkings are all encouraged!

(Boat race rules are below.)

πŸ”₯🐷 The First Tucka-Grillers Pig Roast! 🐷πŸ”₯

After all that rowing, everyone will have earned some dinner.

The Tucka-Grillers will put a 58-pound whole pig on the rotisserie right after the Oakton meet, and by around 6:30 p.m., it will be ready to feast. Rain or shine, all Tuckahoe families are invited!

Bring a side dish, dessert, or something to share, and help us kick off what we hope becomes a delicious new Tuckahoe tradition.

Here are the rules for a fun boat race:

🎯 Objective: Work as a team to build and race a cardboard boat across the pool using cardboard, duct tape, and your creativity!

πŸ‘₯ Age Groups: Teams will compete within their respective age groups, and each group will race and be judged separately.

  • Row, row, row your boat: 8&under
  • Just Keep Swimming: Ages 9–10
  • Sink or Swim: Ages 11–12
  • Rock the Boat: Ages 13 and above
    • Multiple age groups are allowed within the same team. Age group is determined by the oldest member of the group.

🧱 1. Materials Allowed

  • Cardboard sheets and boxes
  • Duct tape
  • Cellophane wrap / Color plastic wrap

🚫 Not allowed: Paint, markers, or glue (will dissolve and soil the pool), flotation devices, waterproof spray, or premade parts (such as oars)

πŸ› οΈ 2. Team Size: 4+ participants per team

  • Only 1 or 2 sailors inside the boat during the race
    • All other teammates help build and cheer

🌊 3. Race Rules:

  • First one across the pool wins!
  • Boat power must be built; no paddles or manufactured oars.
  • Racers must remain inside the boat (ie, no pushing the ship!)
  • If the boat sinks, the race ends for that team (but style points still possible!)
  • NEW RULES:
    • Only single-hull boats are allowed.
    • Boat must be immediately removed from the water after completion or sinking, or the team will be DQ’d.

πŸ… 4. Awards

The officials will evaluate each age group in multiple fun categories (you can only get one award):

  • πŸ₯‡ Fastest Boat
  • 🎨 Most Creative Design
  • πŸ˜‚ Most Dramatic Sink
